Reading List for December 15, 2017

Infanticide On Aeon, Sandra Newman writes about the historic ubiquity of what strikes us as utterly monstrous and unthinkable, and in what forms it survives still today.

Universal Basic Bullshit On The New Inquiry, Carmen Petaccio calls out the billionaires who tout universal basic income to help keep their customers funded and simultaneously offset their responsibility for paying their employees.

Bella In The Wych Elm The Unredacted writes about one of Britain’s most enduring true crime mysteries (I said one of), the 1943 discovery of a woman’s skeleton in the hollowed-out trunk of a tree.

Lake City Quiet Pills: The Internet’s Biggest Mystery On Dirge, Melanie Porter writes about a series of Reddit posts that seem to be written by a member of a team of US military-backed assassins. I can’t tell if this is fake or real but it’s extremely interesting either way.

Is Elon Musk Even Allowed to Send His Car To Deep Space? On Verge, Loren Grush calms fears and concerns about SpaceX’s plans to carry a Tesla Roadster into orbit around Mars. It will happen, apparently, but it’s not as bad as it first appears.

Mystery In the Woods On Reuters, Blake Morrison and Nicholas Bogel-Burroughs write about the discovery of a woman’s severed head in the woods in Pennsylvania, which had been surgically severed and the cervical column removed, suggesting the work of body brokers. Depressingly, no one has come forward to claim her remains.

I’m always looking for things to read. If you know an interesting article, send it to me at josh@areyouseriousclark.com
